Morocco Earthquake

Urgent appeal to assist the victims of the earthquake in Morocco.

Morocco Earthquake Appeal

On September 8, 2023, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the High Atlas region in Morocco at 11 pm, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. The impact has been severe, with the current death toll of at least 2,000 people, and this number is expected to rise as the days go by.
The earthquake’s epicenter was in the High Atlas Mountains, located 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, at a depth of 18.5km. It has affected several provinces and municipalities, including al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, Taroudant and Agadir.
Many of the casualties are believed to be in remote villages nestled within the rugged High Atlas mountains, making access and rescue efforts incredibly challenging. Blocked roads are hampering the arrival of ambulances, and the difficult mountainous terrain, the risk of landslides, and the vast distances are complicating rescue and relief operations.
The historic city of Marrakech, the nearest major city to the earthquake’s epicenter, has also suffered significant damage. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has witnessed the collapse of homes and other structures, adding to the scale of this catastrophe.
The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Morocco, with tremors felt as far away as Algeria and Portugal. Aftershocks have left families too frightened to seek shelter, forcing exhausted survivors to sleep in the streets.
In response to this dire situation, Sayaban Welfare is collaborating closely with local humanitarian organisations and will be on the ground to provide vital aid. We are actively monitoring the evolving situation and conducting rapid needs assessments to identify the most pressing requirements.
Our response will encompass the distribution of food and emergency aid kits including hygiene related items, water, medical supplies and other supplies to those who need it most. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating earthquake. Join us in supporting our relief efforts for the High Atlas earthquake victims.
