Emergency appeal for families in Sandakan and long-term support for students in Semporna.
On April 19, 2026, a devastating fire tore through the water village of Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan. In a matter of hours, an estimated 1,000 homes were reduced to ash, displacing over 9,000 residents.
This community, built on stilts over the water, is home to some of the most vulnerable families in Borneo, including many who are stateless and have no safety net. Having lost their homes, their belongings, and their sense of security, they are now facing a secondary crisis of hunger and disease.
While we respond to the immediate tragedy in Sandakan, our heart remains with the long-term struggle of the students in Semporna.
In the floating villages of Semporna, many children are denied access to formal schooling due to their status and extreme poverty. Madrasah Al Salam serves as a beacon of hope for these invisible children, providing them with a safe space to learn, grow, and dream of a life beyond the margins.
